The Center for Urban Resilience Research (CURE) Research Cluster, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro on Tuesday (21/1) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the title “Mapping Initiatives and Stakeholders: Preparing an Integrated Vision for the Development of Semarang Metropolitan 2045”. This event took place at the Novotel Hotel Semarang.

This activity is part of the collaborative research conducted by a consortium team consisting of CURE-FT UNDIP, ONE Architecture, and the Government of the Netherlands through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). There are dozens of policymakers involved in this FGD, ranging from international, national, provincial, regency, to city levels.

“This research is a follow-up to the WaL program (Water as Leverage, a program from RVO) which focuses on the economic-social and technical pillars, governance, and financing,” said Prof. Dr-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T., M.T., MPS., a researcher from CURE-FT UNDIP.

Thi event is divided into two sessions. The first session is the presentation session. In this session, several experts were involved as resource persons, such as Ivo van der Linden from The Government of The Netherlands; Mohammad Irfan Saleh, Ph.D. from the Directorate of Water Resources, Ministry of PPN/Bappenas; Ir. from the Directorate of Rivers and Coastal, Directorate of Water Resources, Ministry of Public Works, and Prof. Dr-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani from CURE-FT UNDIP.

FGD participants from various policy-making elements discussed flood management in Metropolitan Semarang through mapping initiatives

The second session is a participatory FGD session. In this session, 36 participants from various elements discussed together to further explore the challenges, implementation, and potential for replication of existing initiatives in Metropolitan Semarang. This is intended to clarify the role and coordination between policymakers and formulate an effective funding strategy that is still in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“De-integration is a step and implementation reference to help stakeholders act according to their roles. The progress of the activities that we have carried out includes a review of 35 regional regulations, 10 planning documents, and the preparation of a repository,” added Prof. Wiwandari.

The results of this study were then published in a document called “Setting the Scene”, a comprehensive document that aims to build knowledge and coordination among policymakers regarding integrated water management for the future of Metropolitan Semarang. It is hoped that this document can be a basis for helping the City of Semarang realize the Vision of Metropolitan Semarang based on integrated water management.
