The Department of Urban and Regional Planning Hosted Summer Course, Promoting the Importance of GIS for Disaster Risk Mapping

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) Undip, in collaboration with Chiba University and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, is holding again a Summer Course program with the theme “GIS and Remote Sensing for Disaster Risk-Based Spatial Planning”. This program will be held in two sessions, where the offline session held on 4-8 August 2025, and the offline session will be held on 11-31 August 2025.

This Summer Course program is a part of the World Class University program, a funding initiative conducted by Universitas Diponegoro to support international programs. The main objective of this program is to elevate Undip’s reputation on the global stage.

“This summer course that you are having today is a part of our strong commitment to be a world-class university. And Undip is really eager and really supports each faculty to conduct this kind of program,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Hadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc., IPU., Director of Reputation, Partnership and Global Connectivity of Undip.

In this program, there were a total of 118 participants from various countries, such as Egypt, Türkiye, Japan, the United States, Malaysia, Nepal, China, and Germany. These participants, who were predominantly students, also came from world-leading universities, such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Middle East Technical University, Chiba University, Nagoya University, and Northern Arizona University.

In addition to receiving classroom lectures and studio practices, Summer Course participants also had the opportunity to visit several potential flood disaster sites in Pekalongan City together with the Pekalongan City Government

For the offline session, participants will take part in various activities, ranging from classes, studio practice, and field visits. This year, DURP Undip specially collaborated with the Pekalongan City Government to hold several discussions and visit several potential flood disaster sites together with Bapperida, BPBD, and DPUPR of Pekalongan City.

“This year is a little bit special because we will take everybody to Pekalongan. I hope it will be a good experience, because it means that those who are not coming from Indonesia or not from Semarang will get a chance not only to visit Semarang but also to visit another city,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T., M.T., MPS., the Head of the Department of URP Undip.

Prof. Hadiyanto hopes that this Summer Course program can become a platform for participants to gain new experiences and networks that are able to help them collaborate again in the future.

“In this summer course program, we expect that you are not only getting here, but we expect you wiil also get some experiences, establishing networking, getting new network, and the most important thing is you will be able to get long term collaboration, not only between students, but also between you the participants and the lecturers in the department URP,” he said.
