(17/1) The Faculty of Engineering Universitas Diponegoro in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) officially launched a program entitled International Capstone Design UNDIP X UTM. This program resulted from the partnership between the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Diponegoro and its international partner, UTM. This program was held from 13 to 17 January 2025 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
In this program, all participants will implement their knowledge to develop an innovation to solve real-world problems through cross-country projects. In this program, seven students from IUP of Industrial Engineering Undip along with six students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) UTM will collaborate to solve problems in Tanjung Piai National Park, Johor.
M. Mujiya Ulkhaq, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., the supervisor from the Undip team explained that this program was intended as a manifestation of the Faculty of Engineering Undip’s effort to prepare graduates who are global-minded, critical, and adaptive to technological changes. “This program was a real form from us to prepare graduates who are globally minded, critical, and adaptive to modern changes. Students not only learn theories but also directly involved in real cross-country practices,” he said.

This program started when the Undip team, who was supervised by two lecturers from Industrial Engineering Undip, M. Mujiya Ulkhaq, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Dr. Naniek Utami Handayani, S.Si., M.T., arrived at Johor Bahru on 12 January 2025. In the first two days, the participants from Undip attended several activities in UTM, such as Capstone Expo from FKE UTM students and interactive lectures about Design Thinking with UTM students.

On 14 January 2025, the participants engaged in a site visit to Tanjung Piai National Park, Johor. During this visit, the students were divided into three groups to solve real problems in Tanjung Piai National Park. One group was appointed to solve visitor safety issues and develop the wind alarm/detector. The other two groups were commissioned to develop ecotourism strategies with creative and sustainable approaches.

On 15 January 2025, the participants had the opportunity to visit two innovative startups specializing in artificial intelligence-based waste management, namely Treom Tech, Sdn Bhd and Zaquin Resources, Sdn Bhd. Moreover, on the same day, the students also underwent lecture sessions about qualitative design. This visit and lectures aimed to deepen students’ insights when working on their Capstone Design. This program was closed on 16 January 2025 with the UTM Campus Tour and reflection session.
Mujiya added that the International Capstone Design will be continued in May at Universitas Diponegoro and closed with a final presentation in August at UTM. “This project will be continued in Indonesia in May, where students from UTM will visit Undip. A final presentation will be held in August at UTM Johor Bahru, Malaysia,” he said.
Hopefully, this program will not only strengthen the academic partnership between Undip and UTM, but also open collaboration opportunities in the fields of research, community service, and student innovation development internationally.
